Yes, you have a great job and good benefits. In your mind, there’s no reason to work with an analytic recruiting company. But is that the right attitude? Think about this, there will be a shortage of analytic professional by 2015. Some estimates put this closer to a 33% shortage of professional who can work with analytics. For every open position, that is lost revenue for the hiring company. Companies will always be seeking out the best talent but the important point is highly talented analytic professional s may not be aware of great opportunities.
Recruiters are important to this relationship because “they always have their ears to the ground”. Companies will turn to analytic recruiting firms to keep an eye out for good talent and firms will build relationships with candidates to keep them alert. So what steps can a passive candidate make to stay aware of hiring trends?
1) Find a specialized analytic firm in your field and start a relationship with a recruiter. Finding an analytic recruiter within your field is important because they understand the value of passive candidates. If you work with any generic recruiting company, they may not value your career path or understand exactly the positions you’re looking for in the future. Would you see a dentist for a heart problem? Working with recruiters outside of your field may actually damage your reputation; some of those companies have the tendency to send resumes to every company under the sun. I know some of you have had this happen. You go apply to a job and some obscure agency has already submitted your resume. We know, it’s bad for you and it’s bad for us. Main points: understand who has your resume on file, what they will do with it and firms should respect your resume.
2) Ask to be alerted when positions open that are the next step in your career path. You have more potential as a passive candidate who are targeting job specifically. This means more money for you.
3) Know your value. As a passive candidate, the cards are in your hand. You can demand more compared to someone who is sending their resume everywhere or someone who is unemployed.
